When we first dreamed about our business, we had a desire to operate our business the way we thought it should be run. We attract the type of employee of our heart’s desire. We show our appreciation the way the employee’s expect from what we “put out there” in the form of a job description, the form of communication to let them know how they are doing with us, the form of the gift of showing our employees how much they are valued by keeping new customers coming in to the business to help them grow their career.
Have you ever wondered if you are meeting with a “false expectation” with your employees? Pause a minute to think about this. The ability to be as good as your word counts for everything in life today. Being fair, being truthful, and delivering on what you say gives more weight to relationships vs just saying you will do something.
I have had employee’s leave the business. The employee doesn’t usually leave the salon, they leave the leadership. These same employees’ have also returned to our salon because they learned other types of leadership that aren’t as good as their word. The “habit” of being familiar on how you run and operate your business will make a huge impact on your existing staff and your future staff. People talk about who you are and how you treat them. Because the affects of entitlement that has occurred with gen y’ers, we are challenged with understanding what you are faced with in how to help self motivate to achieve their goals in your business. They want something more than just money. Perhaps a survey would be appropriate to find out what is important to your employees.
Be clear about what you expect for each position in your business. Did you notice that I didn’t mention employee’s yet. You, as the owner, must set clear expectations on what you want out of the position to hire for that position. There are certain skill sets that are appropriate for separate positions. Yes, you can cross train into other roles however; be certain that the person whom you hired to bring on has the attributes that match what you are looking for in your business.
Have you ever figured that you hired someone in your business that wasn’t right for your business? Sure, we all have. They are late for work, they don’t clean up after themselves, their sales are low, they just aren’t performing at the level you had expected even after you had talked to them. If you actually talked to them. Part of the problem could be that maybe you hadn’t talk to them when you first hired them about what was expected about the job. Is it possible you were all excited and forgot to even have a job description? Just saying….
